Two-roll Open Mill Trial Run: PVC Compounding

In PVC formulation development, the uniformity of the mixing process directly impacts product performance. Issues such as poor plasticizer dispersion or uneven heat stabilizer distribution become immediately apparent during a trial run on an open two-roll mill.

Hartek recently conducted a pre-sales trial for a client using a laboratory-scale two-roll open mill (Model: HTR-120). The client used PVC raw materials to verify the equipment’s mixing and plasticizing capabilities on-site; the resulting sheets were uniform and featured a smooth surface finish, fully meeting the client’s expectations.

Open Mill

The HTR-120 is driven by a high-quality motor, ensuring stable and reliable speed control. It features a roll width of 300 mm and allows for flexible adjustment of sheet thickness within the 0.2–2 mm range. The steel rolls are hard-chrome plated and mirror-polished, boasting a Rockwell hardness exceeding 60 to ensure durability during long-term use. Heating options include electric or oil heating to suit specific process requirements; the system supports temperatures up to 300°C with a control precision of ±2°C, fully meeting the thermal stability demands of PVC compounding.

The two-roll open mill is designed with high operational safety, featuring an automatic shutdown mechanism triggered by the protective cover and an emergency braking system activated by the reverse-opening door. The gap between the two rolls is manually adjustable with 0.01 mm precision, enabling accurate control of sheet thickness. It is equipped with a Siemens TFT touchscreen and a Siemens PLC centralized control system; a recipe storage function facilitates rapid switching between process parameters, while dual mechanical and electrical safety protections ensure compliance with CE safety standards.

PVC is a heat-sensitive material with a narrow processing window; insufficient temperatures lead to inadequate plasticization, while excessive temperatures cause decomposition and discoloration. The HTR-120 utilizes a precision temperature control system to maintain the roll surface temperature within the set range, effectively preventing thermal degradation of the PVC during the compounding process.
As the PVC raw material undergoes repeated shearing, compression, and folding between the twin rolls, additives—such as plasticizers—are uniformly dispersed into the PVC matrix, and the material gradually plasticizes to form a uniform sheet. The customer expressed satisfaction with the quality of the resulting sheet.
